Using a USB audio interface with an Android phone

By Mxsie · Updated October 20, 2026

A USB-C connector is a connection type, not a guarantee that a phone and interface will work together. Mxsie uses the audio inputs Android makes available. Start with a short test of the exact phone, cable, interface and headphones you plan to use.

Check the interface and its power needs

Read the manufacturer's mobile compatibility and power instructions for your exact model. Some setups need an adapter or a powered USB hub. Use a cable that carries data. If the interface is not detected, verify the cable and power before changing the song.

Scarlett, PreSonus and other interfaces are input targets for Mxsie, but no specific model-and-phone combination has completed our physical qualification yet. Do not buy hardware based on an assumption that every channel will be available.

Choose input and output separately

Connect the interface before opening Audio setup. Choose its exposed input and a supported channel count, then choose the headphone output you want to hear. The recording path checks the opened stream configuration instead of silently assuming the requested format is available.

Plug headphones into the interface if that is your chosen output. If the interface has direct monitoring, follow its manual to hear your live signal locally. Mxsie plays the backing mix but does not echo the live microphone through a software monitoring loop.

Check a short overdub before a full session

Record a short, clear performance, then add a second take while listening to the first. Check the alignment and input levels. Mxsie includes a route timing check and manual offset adjustment; they do not turn a changing Bluetooth connection into a zero-delay connection.

Changing a cable, input, sample rate or headphone output can change the timing. Repeat the short check after changing the route. Stop before unplugging an interface. If Android interrupts the recording or the route changes, inspect the take before continuing.

Keep the first setup small

Begin with the phone microphone or one interface. More channels also mean more setup and storage. Multiple independent USB devices are not automatically one synchronized interface; device aggregation and synchronized multi-phone capture are not delivered features of the Android preview.

When a setup works, note the phone model, Android version, interface model, power arrangement and selected channels. Those details make a compatibility report useful and make it easier to recreate your session.
